How To Support Black History Month

Black History Month is for celebrating the achievements of African Americans and recognizing their central role in history. We hope you will show your appreciation and love for the African American history, culture and community this month and every month. Since the Bahamas is a country of predominately African descendants, here are a few ideas to celebrate Black History Month this year wherever you are in the world.

Learning black history is part of the curriculum in childhood education. By now you might have forgotten! Or crucial snippets might have been left out in your history class. Educate yourself by reading books! If reading isn’t your cup of tea, listen to an audiobook or a podcast >>HERE.

LISTEN TO MUSIC BY AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTISTS

There are thousands of talented and iconic African American artists. You might have a few favorites of your own. Instead of listening to your go-to Spotify playlist while you work or do a workout, listen to a Black History Month playlist >>HERE.

SUPPORT AFRICAN AMERICAN BUSINESSES

Supporting black-owned businesses can help build relationships and boost community morale. There are several easy ways you can do your part to support Black-owned businesses. A great place to start is to seek out Black-owned businesses you can get behind, and give them some business. Then, spread the word. Learn 201+ Black-owned businesses to support year-round>>HERE.

Ways you can support Black-owned businesses:

  • Be intentional about shopping at Black-owned businesses
  • Recommend Black-owned businesses in person and on social media
  • Invest in the Black community
  • Build relationships with Black-owned businesses

 

EXUMA SAILING CLUB UPDATE

If you have been lucky enough to visit Exuma, you know that sailing is a local, traditional sport. The Exuma Sailing Club is a fixture in the youth of the local community. The Exuma Sailing Club embraces the culture and pride of the community while teaching discipline, skill, teamwork and good sportsmanship to the youth of Exuma.

Through fundraising, the Exuma Sailing Club is able to offer sailing at all levels to the youth of Exuma for free. Every young boy and girl in Exuma has access to the great sport of sailing, and to learn more about the importance of the traditional way of sailing regardless of their status or financial means.

This month the Exuma Sailing Team is competing in the Sir Durward Knowles National Junior Sailing Championship. Local Exuma resident, Tanaj Manos is excited to compete, listen to what he has to say about the Exuma Sailing Club >>HERE.

In honor of Black History Month, we ask you to please consider making a donation to the Exuma Sailing Club. Donations go towards prioritizing kids and boats, with a long-term goal of presenting an A-Class sloop for the George Town Community.
